Now that the garden is starting to bloom it's obvious spring is in effect. Since this isn't our house and only a rental it has been a surprise to see what is surfacing- so far we've got daffodils and tulips, but I would love to have the back garden be a typical English garden full of lavender, peonies, hydrangea and roses. We shall see!
One thing I would really love to do here is start a small vegetable patch- I'm thinking a raised bed may be best or a few items I could do in planters. While we were in the US, I really got into gardening and what I could grow. I started small with a bell pepper plant, but it grew fast and produced enough bell peppers, we probably could have gotten by without buying any from the grocery store. The Times on Saturday and Sunday had
several articles on
vegetable gardening and it has made me excited to start! Even if you are lacking room or confined to a flat, but have access to a balcony there are so many options. From
strawberry tubs to
potato barrels, no space is too small.
What could be better than fresh organic veggies grown by you? I think I'm going to start with something easy, so maybe another bell pepper plant, some onions, garlic and a few planters with herbs like thyme and rosemary. I think I may have to order a bed that comes with supports for a cover to protect my crops as our neighbour goes overboard feeding the birds. It kind of grosses me out because it's not a lot of pretty birds- she seems to attract mostly pigeons. I don't want them touching anything I'm trying to grow!
